Emotional Aromapsychotherapy in West Lothian, Scotland
What is Emotional Aromapsychotherapy?
Emotional Aromapsychotherapy is an ancient healing art that uses essential oils and plant extracts. Many ancient cultures, including Indian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman understood the connection between aroma and emotions and mood. Recently, science has started to investigate ancient methods, finally recognising the link between scent and human emotion. They discovered that smells can trigger memories, stimulating emotional responses. These responses act as aromatic pathways, directing aroma to different areas of the brain, thus triggering specific emotional responses.
How Does Emotional Aromapsychotherapy Work?
When we inhale the aromatic molecules produced by plants, this aroma is recognised and processed by the olfactory system in the brain, which is responsible for controlling our sense of smell. The olfactory system is connected to the limbic system that stores memories and emotions.
The scent travels first to the top of the nose, where it connects with the olfactory cells. These are specialised nerve cells, equipped with tiny hairs, that are geared to recognise specific aromas. They send nerve impulses to the limbic system, which then responds to the aroma based on the specific memories associated with it. This response alters your brain’s chemistry. A rush of feeling follows, causing mood change.
This amazing quality of Essential oils has been used by Emotional Aromatherapists to enhance well-being and manage emotions for thousands of years.
What Are the Properties of Essential Oils?
In general, essential oils can have either stimulating or calming effects.
The ‘floral’ category of essential oils typically includes tree, herb, and grass oils that are composed of monoterpene alcohols that possess calming properties. These oils promote the sense of being grounded, and soothing and renewing properties, as they contain sesquiterpenes, esters, and oxides.
Conversely, mint oils have a high concentration of ketones and are energising and uplifting. Citrus oils, containing limonene, beta-pinene, and monoterpenes, have a highly uplifting effect. Many spice essential oils, coming from phenols, are known for their warming properties.
Do all People Respond to the Emotional Aromapsychotherapy Similarly?
No. Our responses are very individual. This is due to the personal nature of our memories and triggers. Our reactions are also conditioned by our personal preferences, genetic makeup, environmental factors, and even the internal environment in our body, e.g. the presence of parasites, fungi or bacteria.
Another important factor is the quality of the essential oils themselves. Most shop-bought essential oils are not of sufficient quality to perform this work, due to both the processing method used and impurities added to the oil. This changes the chemical composition of the oil, thereby reducing its effectiveness. However, pure, organic oils preserve their untainted natural aroma.
Ask me when you come along and I can let you experience the difference in the potency between different brands of essential oil. The difference is immense.
How Is Emotional Aromapsychotherapy Being Used in My Practice?
I only use doTERRA pure organic, therapeutic food-grade essential oils in my work, in particular, their Emotional Aromatherapy system.
The dōTERRA Emotional Aromatherapy™ System has been specifically created to address people’s emotional issues. These oil blends are mixed based on combinations of specific plant groups that are known to deliver particular emotional responses.
These oils can be applied to the skin, inhaled, and even taken internally. During your treatment, I may recommend one or more of these methods, depending on your personal situation.
Within your Emotional Aromatherapy treatment plan, you will be introduced to one or more of the six emotional oil blends:
• dōTERRA Motivate®
• dōTERRA Cheer®
• dōTERRA Passion®
• dōTERRA Forgive®
• dōTERRA Console®
• dōTERRA Peace®
Each session will be focused on a particular subject: motivation, joy, passion, forgiveness, consolation, or peace. We will work with only one blend at a time, aligning yourself with their essence, memorising their scent, and anchoring your memories to their smell. This process will program your mind to deliver the desired emotional response whenever you smell the oil. Similar to the Pavlovian response, you develop a reflex to the aroma you work with, so that even the thought, or memory, of smelling the oil, will produce the desired positive effect.
This is an incredibly powerful process for dealing with anger, stress, depression, anxiety and other emotional issues.
To achieve this, we use a combination of psychotherapeutic techniques, including, but not limited to, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Counselling, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Visualisation, and guided meditation in combination with the oils.
What Is the Process of Working with Emotional Oils?
This is a treatment plan for 3 sessions.
Your first session will focus on understanding the sources of your emotional challenge and your experiences of the opposite emotional state, for example, anger and peace. You will then be led through a process designed to break down the links in your mind that bring about this emotion. Equally, a similar process will be used to strengthen the links on the opposite side. Once you are in the desired emotional state, you will have your first experience of the corresponding oil blend. We will then anchor this first positive experience using an NLP anchoring technique.
The second session will focus on tracing and releasing the emotion from various areas in your body. In Chinese medicine, there is a view that emotion can get “stuck” in certain areas of the body, e.g. organs and acupuncture meridians. We will apply the necessary oil blend to these affected areas and release the stagnant emotional energy and replace it with the healing and uplifting vibrations of the oil. At this stage, we will learn to understand how your body reacts to emotion, where it ‘stores’ negative emotion, and how, using oils, these tensions can be released and healed. We will work together on an appropriate method to allow you to release the emotion from your system whenever it arises, e.g. through meridian tapping.
During your final session, we will work on ‘rewriting’ old experiences that are still sitting deeply in your subconscious memories, using the Matrix Reimprinting (MR) technique. You will learn for yourself how to rewrite negative experiences and to create and anchor new ones in your mind, using MR supported by an emotional oil blend.
A bottle of the required oil blend is included in the price of your session package as well as samples of other uplifting oils.
